Bohinj Lookout

Friday, 6th July

Distance 3.3 miles
Total Ascent 485 feet
Total Descent 485 feet
Time 1.75 hours
Weather Wet to start but clearing up later

Having settled in at the hotel we gathered for the planned orientation walk but the rain decided to have its say first. With water bouncing off the tarmac we decided to delay the start of the walk and eventually the rain relented (a little). Our first visit was to the monument to the first men to climb Mount Triglav in 1779. From here we moved on to the edge of Lake Bohinj where we found the statue of the Zlatorog, a legendary white chamois buck. Leaving the lake we found some shelter at the Church of St John the Baptist, The first known recorded mention of the church was from 1464, but the vaulted Gothic presbytery originated around 1400.

Heading up into the woodland the weather improved and the sun was shining by the time we reached the viewpoint. The mist cleared to give us views across the lake and to the surrounding mountains - what delights they held in store for us.
