Distance 14 miles
Total Ascent 3,000 feet
Total Descent 3,300 feet
Maximum Altitude 2,784 feet
Time 6.5 hours
Weather Rain initially clearing to intermittent showers then a sunny afternoon

Catching the local bus we made our way through the rain to Graniti. After taking time to stock up on lunch supplies, and waiting for the rain to ease off, we were soon heading out on an ascending track. Fortunately it wasn't too long before we were able to discard the waterproofs. Leaving the main track an indistinct path climbed more steeply onto a ridge where we found a good spot for elevenses. Continuing along our route we eventually reached a hause which would have had good views down to Taormina and the coast - but for the mist. Stopping here for lunch gave time for the mist to clear - just as we were leaving.  However, better views were to come as we continued to ascend to the high point from where we could see the coastline to the north and south, and across to Italy.  A sharp rocky descent took us down to the road and then on to the Greek steps leading into Castelmola where a handy café was the ideal spot for drinks, and from where some made a quick detour to the Tourist Bar for Sicilian ice cream. We then continued on to Francavilla where we visited the Little Roman Theatre which began to be used at the same time as the Greek Theatre. It was designed exclusively for musical and dramatic performances.
