Walking straight from the hotel we headed up through Old Francavilla and crossed the Alcantara River via a high bridge with good views of the waterfall. After walking beside the river for a short time we took a track past a young oak forest and passed an unusual umbrella pine.  Following a mule track we climbed up to Castiglione which is set on a rocky spur overlooking the Alcantara Valley. Climbing out of the village we followed a good ridge track which eventually led towards the river. Passing through a small village we were attracted by an inviting square with a fountain - and an ice cream shop. Suitably refreshed we continued on to Francavilla and the promised Fortuna Bar where we enjoyed coffee and cake. A short walk then brought us back to the hotel.
