Voss Ridge Walk

Wednesday, 7th July 2010

An early morning stroll took me through Voss to photograph the church. Information about Voss tells us that King Magnus the Law Mender ordered the building of a church in Voss. Built in 1271-77, this stately, grey, stone-church with its octagonal wooden spire is without doubt one of the most remarkable in Western Norway. The stone walls of the church are 2 meters thick in places and the richly decorated interior boasts medieval and renaissance art.

With reasonably good weather forecast today we were hoping to complete the walk intended for Monday but changed because of the weather. We followed the initial route, again cutting through the zig-zags after leaving the bridge over the gorge. We soon turned off the track to head up through trees and along a narrow and sometimes rocky path. As we climbed over more open ground the weather deteriorated and we made our way to a rocky outcrop. Here it was very windy and it was decided to return from this point instead of continuing on to the ridge. Retracing our steps, and back in more sheltered conditions, there was time to enjoy the scenery but not many opportunities for photos.

Looks like the outside lanterns are still on . . .

but then it is only 6.35am . . .

so I don't suppose I will be able to look inside!

Looking across to the ridge we may be heading for  . . .

and there is still some cloud hanging around . . .

on both sides of the lake

A good lookout for our morning stop - shame about the weather . . .

and eventually it is just too windy to carry on . . .

but I brave the weather a little longer for a summit photo (well, the summit of a rocky outcrop!)

Peter and Brian check out the snow . . .

while Gillian returns with a few sheep . . .

which try their luck with Judy

Taking in the scenery . . .

as the group heads down through the woodland . . .

on a rather steep section . . .

and we pass one of the famous red Ts that mark the route

Voss comes into view along with two more lakes further up the valley

Woodcutters - with big machinery . . .

and a good spot for a catch-up stop
