Tengboche to Monjo

Tuesday, 14th March 2012

Distance 10.2 miles
Total Ascent 2,030 feet
Maximum Altitude 12,697 feet
Time 9 hours

A new day brought much better weather giving us great views of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. We took some time out for photos before starting the long descent to the Dudh Kosi River, an easy path but very dusty. After crossing the river it was uphill again until we reached the balcony path. this took us round to Namche Bazar and lunch at the Kongde View where we had stayed on our first visit there. Some time was also allowed for shopping - hence the extended time that this section of the route took. Back on familiar ground we made the long descent to the lookout point which we had named the 'Everest Oranges' stop. This time there was no view of Everest, a reminder that we had been very lucky to have numerous sightings of the summit. Continuing on our journey we crossed the river a couple of times before reaching Monjo and the Summit Lodge we had used on our first night - seemed such a long time ago!

An early morning picture from my bedroom window, with snow plumes rising from Everest and Lhotse, 14 miles away in a straight line

An hour later the sun is catching the edges of the ridges

and zooming in

The sun is just creeping into the valley . . .

and with time to indulge . . .

its hard to resist . . .

taking a multitude of photos . . .

as the snow plume blows from the summit

Nearly time to go . . .

so a last one for the album

Wish I knew the name of this one!

The monastery sparkles in the morning sunshine . . .

and highlights the ornate entrance

The group gathers outside the tea house . . .

but we'll let the animals go first - they are faster than us

The Kongde Ri comes into view as we start the descent . . .

and in front of it we can see the lookout point that we explored from Namche Bazar

I expect these ladders are being taken to Base Camp . . .

for the Everest expedition that starts at the end of the month

More supplies on their way up!

A lovely balcony path lies ahead . . .

as hill after hill overlaps in the distance

As we reach Namche Bazar we pass the school . . .

where children play in the wind blown dust

Time to plough the 'field' . . .

but no tractors here!

The 'Everest Oranges' lookout point - but no views today . . .

this is what we saw on our way up 6 days ago

What a load!

Eventually we make our way down . . .

to cross the river . . .

but the following steep section requires careful navigation . . .

as the animals pass us on a tricky bit

Then it's alongside the river and on to Monjo
