Khumjung to Phortse

Sunday, 12th March 2012

Distance 5.6 miles
Total Ascent 1,872 feet
Maximum Altitude 13,026 feet
Time 7 hours

Leaving the tea house we began with a descent before tackling a long climb which included a rocky staircase. Reaching a pass we stopped at a tea house for lemon tea, etc, and a welcome break. Then it was down again to Phortse Tenga and lunch, with time to enjoy the sun. After crossing the river another ascent took us to Phortse and the Thamserku View Lodge. This is owned by Karma Rita Sherpa who has summited Everest 6 times and Cho-Oyu 7 times. We were made to feel vey welcome with the fire kept well stocked.

The Boys prepare the bags . . .

ready for transportation

Time for a stroll - going to pasture (if they can find any)

What a load!

Our path . . .

with the ever present sow-capped summits . . .

and often with a steep drop (note the sudden descent to a lower level)

Our path lies below the triangular shaped rock . . .

but the Boys climb up between the rock and the mountain face

There's that mountain again - and some remote buildings

Phortse comes into view - but it isn't as near as it looks

Just captured a large bird

A closer view of Phortse

It must be cold here at night!

The river from the bridge . . .

and looking down the valley

Thamserku - one of my favourite summits

A room with a view

I think I will give the shower a miss today!
