Queimadas, Caldeirão Verde (Green Cauldron), Caldeirão Inferno (Hell's Cauldron), Many Tunnels, Cruzinhas

Starting at an elevation of 3,348 feet, in the Queimadas Forestry Park, this walk winds its way along the levada of Caldeirão Verde, passing through steep cliffs and mountains under a dense canopy of luxurious forest. The levada was built in the 18th century and the more recent addition of protective cables make it a relatively straightforward walk - though there is a long climb up to the Levada do Pico Ruivo which takes its name from Madeira's highest peak. Pico Ruivo also gives its name to the longest tunnel which takes 45 minutes to complete - it's quite strange to imagine this peak high above your head while you make your way in complete darkness - or you would have to if you didn't have a torch! Other tunnels on this walk, and there are quite a few, vary in distance and height - Mind Your Head!!! A short detour to Caldeirão Inferno is not to be missed - the journey to the centre of the earth!
A great experience in the Laurissilva Forestwhich is one of Portugal’s 7 Natural Wonders – it won the prize in the class of Forests and Woods. And deservedly so because this forest indigenous to Madeira and of a unique beauty has been classified as World Natural Heritage since 1999 by UNESCO.
