Baia d'Abra, Casa do Sardinia, Baia d'Abra

The Ponta do Sao Lorenco, situated at the eastern tip of the island, is a narrow, irregular curved peninsula distinguished from the rest of the island by its smoothterrain and low altitude. In 1982 this area was declared a geological nature reserve with the main purpose of preserving its flora and fauna. Near the end of the walk, surrounded by date palms, is the Casa do Sardinha, a park ranger station built in the early 1900s for observing the wildlife and maintaining the path.

The volcancic landscape of this rugged headland consists of striped cliff faces, basalt intrusions into sandstone and eroded rock under basalt tors. Uptilted magma dykes can be traced across the terrain. Why not see how many of these features you can spot in the photos below?

This was an easy walk with many opportunites to enjoy the spectacular scenery. With lots of time to take pictures and constantly changing views you will find below many photos which speak for themselves and therefore some are without captions. I hope this is an enjoyable reminder of the walk for Al & Jane's group.
