Max Altitude: 2,672 feet Time: 4 hours
Weather Mist, rain & hail
Comments: With the weather forecast to improve in the afternoon we started walking at 11.30am. As we walked beside Lingmell Gill the effects of the recent rain were obvious - the water being very fast flowing. At the crossing point we were unable to cross over and decided to stay to the left of the gill as described in Wainwright's book. On reaching Lingmell Scars we decided on a change of plan and climbed the flanks of Lingmell to reach the main path. The climb was grassy most of the way but we did have to battle with some heavy rain. We continued on the main path but with mist and very strong wind it wasn't easy to find the summit cairn - but we did! We managed to get some views as the mist drifted around the surrounding fells. Initially retracing our steps we eventually reached the steep rocky section. The first part is now stepped but there is still a section of steep scree path. At this point the weather decided to throw some hail at us! So much for an improving weather forecast!!! There was an improvement in the weather as we completed the descent. As we hadn't had a lunch stop we decided to drive to the parking spot from where the 'Best View in England' was taken.
