Walk: Denham Hill, Hough Hill, Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Top Lock, Whittle Hills, Whittle-le-Woods
Start Point: Home Grid Reference: SD 574 226
Distance: 6.5 miles Ascent: 880 feet
Time: 2.75 hours
Weather: Very mild and mainly dry
Comments: With limited time and the possibility of rain I decided on a local walk mainly across fields with some tracks and road walking.

M61 - quiet at 2.15pm

An interesting tree . . .

where erosion has exposed the roots

Denham quarry . . .

and again from the higher path

Zooming in on Winter Hill and in the opposite direction . . .

Preston - 5 miles away

Hough Hill trig point . . .

where it is time for coffee

A footbridge takes me across the stream . . .

to reach the canal . . .

where a moorhen is out for a swim

Lots of narrowboats are moored . . .

at Top Lock . . .

where there is a big difference in the level of the water

A long tunnel takes me back under the M61 . . .

and the river flows through a lower tunnel
